Volume 1 Imbolc
The Year of Empowerment
February 1st marked the first day in the Season of Imbolc. This Celtic holiday is celebrated as the second holiday after the Turn of the Wheel-or the Pagan New Year. Those who practice the old ways celebrate a new holiday; it marks the beginning of a specific season. For instance, Yule was celebrated on December 21st. However the Season of Yule was honored until February 1st. There are 8 major holidays in the 'old' calendar. Each one represents a given season. Each 'Sabbat' brings with it a host to honor and celebrate.
'Imbolc has also been called 'Imbolg', which means 'in milk.' It is a holiday that celebrates, 1 part, the Celtic Triple Goddess, Brid, in her 'maiden' aspect. Like many religions, most Pagans honor a 'Triad', which is a spirit that evolves into 3 parts. In this instance the triad represents the aspect of the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. This goes along with the phases of the moon, the first being 'new', the second being 'full' and the last being 'waning'.
Ancients have also referred to Brid as Brigid, Bridgit and Bride. She is considered to be the energy that is protection and knowledge. She has been honored with the ability to be a teacher of wisdom and the Magical Arts. She is credited with helping followers understand the importance of respecting the land. She is considered to be a Goddess of Fire and Fertility.
She is honored at this season because ancients believed that it was she, who made sure there was enough food and warmth to carry them through the final days of winter. By honoring her they felt she would help them to heal those weakened by the long winter. They also looked toward her for creative inspiration. As they celebrated her and her holiday, they felt that she would gift them by showing them early signs of spring, insuring their spirit that winter was coming to an end.
Bringing Old Traditions Forward
Today early February shows us lengthening days. We look forward to the growing light. If we are out walking, we strain to see an occassional bud poking out from under the soil.
Bring some 'early spring' to your home by planting seeds in a garden pot. Place them in a window that receives some sunlight. You can move them outside in late spring, once the fear of very cold weather has passed.
Some seeds you may want to begin are:
Heather, Sage, Chamomile, Mint, Basil
